The Popularity of High School Sports and the Nostalgia Factor
High school sports are hugely popular. Millions of kids play high school sports and they have many more millions of fans that watch them that include friends and family such as parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc... When those kids graduate they go on to this thing called the real world but they never forget their high school sports experience.
It's actually quite amazing the level of detail that a 60 year old man can recall playing football, baseball, basketball, and other high school sports games that occured over 40 years ago! But really the reason they can do this is because of good ol Nostalgia. Reminiscing about the good ol days happens only a few years after high school games and almost every man and I'm sure women too love to talk about the glory days of their high school sports careers.
Personalized High School Sports Yearbook
There's no doubt that a keepsake such as a personalized high school sports yearbook would be incredibly popular. Sure, schools have yearbooks and include bits and pieces here and there about players, but usually the popular players are the ones that get in the yearbook and even they get limited coverage because yearbooks have to cover more than just sports.
So what exactly is a personalized high school sports year book? Well, it would be a yearbook that would contain pictures and stats of a player in games. So basically a personal highlight reel. Who wouldn't love to have a personal highlight reel of themselves playing in high school? What about parents and grand parents? Absolutely! They'd love to have a picture highlight reel of their son, daughter, grandson, and grandaughter for themselves and to show off to their friends with great pride.
Thoughts on How to Implement this High School Sports Yearbook Business Idea
1. A critical component is getting quality pictures of games. This means that you need someone at every game to take pictures. It wouldn't be financially feasible to pay someone to attend all of these games so the key would be getting parents or students to volunteer for this job. 10 years ago this would be impossible because you had to be pretty knowledeable of photography to take quality pictures but with today's technology it's a lot easier for amateurs to take professional quality pictures.
2. An alternative and perhaps better option to getting someone to take pictures is to get 2 or 3 people per game to video tape the game from different angles using a high definition camera. You'd then have the option of creating a High School Sports Video website with video highlight reels of each player. Since the videos are high definition you'd be able to utilize video and photo editing software to extract the best photos to use for the high school sports yearbook.
3. You'll need a method to upload and share all these videos as you'll most likely need to outsource the video and photo editing to India or another low cost labor country to be able to make the cost of the yearbooks financially feasible. Outsourcing would be possible because ever player has a number and you could just tell your outsourcing partner to extract action highlights of each player and get a good mixture of offensive and defensive plays for each player. An alternative option is getting each school to establish a video and photography class were this would be the class project for each semester.
4. You'll need to purchase printing and yearbook publishing software or find a partner to do the printing and fulfilment
5. You'll need to hire a website development and hosting company to create a website and setup the video upload/edit/publish work flow
These of course are just a few challenges you'd face. There are many more including getting the huge investment needed to get this business off the ground and profitable. However, this is still a pretty exciting business idea, especially when there is a market of millions of high school athletes and their families that would love to have your product either today or several years down the road when they start reminiscing about the good ol days!
